delpire & co is delighted to welcome Japanese photographer Takashi Homma for a signing session of the last copies of his book Tokyo Olympia, published by Nieves in December 2023.
In concept and spirit, Tokyo Olympia extends and reinterprets the artist’s reference work, Tokyo Suburbia, which won the Kimura Ihei Commemorative Photography Award in 1999.
What kind of place is Tokyo in the run-up to the 2020 Olympic Games? How has it changed, and how is it adapting and preparing for the event? Based on these questions and themes, Tokyo Olympia attempts to capture the nature of the megalopolis that is Tokyo. But Homma’s photography – characterised by ‘a uniquely cold eye that rejects sentimentality’ – does so not only by documenting its concrete form, its architecture, streets and buildings, but also its atmosphere, diversity and people, capturing the fundamental change that has taken place in places such as Shibuya, Tsukiji Market, Bayside and the National Stadium.
Takashi Homma (b. 1962, lives and works in Tokyo) is one of Japan’s most active, internationally recognised and influential photographers, both in the world of photography and contemporary art. Homma’s photography, which takes a singular, neutral and distant look at its subjects, explores the relationships between individuals and the urban environment from a socio-political perspective.
