Dans les prisons de Lyon

Saint Paul and Saint Joseph are 19th-century prisons in the city of Lyon. Dilapidated and overcrowded, they were finally closed in 2009. Before transformation led to a sort of collective amnesia, Ernest Pignon-Ernest and Bruno Paccard decided to immortalize the sites.

Through drawing, painting and installations for the one, and photography for the other, the two men imprinted the memory of the men and women who had been incarcerated there onto those abandoned walls. The images, brimming with both anger and lyricism, capture the essence of lost freedom.
