The decline of fossil fuels, the “carbon footprint” of our leisure activities, pandemics and the reinvention of seasonal mass migrations in the last-minute bookings of the digital economy have challenged the predictions of tourism professionals. At the same time, the abolition of distance by video takes us away from the embodied experience of travel as surely as public, professional and domestic socialities interpenetrate in the new geography of our lives. Between routine places of residence and confines as dangerous as they are unreachable, we reorganize the vacancy of an “intermediate tourism” that is secure and close to home, but also the reinvention of distant fictions, of terrestrial utopias where we will never go again…
