The bookshop is delighted to welcome Julien Carreyn for the launch of Venise Out In, published by Nero with the support of Socièta Delle Api.
In Venise Out In, Julien Carreyn takes us on a photographic tour of Venice.
“I got up at 4 a.m. to stroll through the darkness of the deserted city, I couldn’t make out much, I got lost in the narrow streets, it was cold. The sun came out brightly, and here I was in the area around the architecture school. The streets fill up with students, workers and tourists, and I walk down a cul-de-sac blocked by a low brick and wire wall. Beyond it is a ramshackle boatyard, I don’t know whether it’s a garage or a scrapyard. I turn back towards the centre to cross the Academy bridge. I take out of my pocket the large key to the gate of Silvia’s house in Campo San Stefano. In the entrance, a gondola rests on trestles, and a construction lamp lights up a section of wall. On the first floor, torn wallpaper, garden chairs and tables, sacks of rubble, murals and empty shelves indicate the transitory state of the premises. I open a window: outside the sun is at its zenith and the air is freezing. I spot Cristiano, get out and he guides me to the northern end of the island: three straight alleys with little traffic. We hung around for a while, enjoying the simple, calm beauty of the place, then it got dark, the shops closed and there were few passers-by. I return to the hotel and spread out my polaroids on the bed, taken in the streets of Venice and in Silvia’s house. I don’t think too much about it. Out, in. […]” — Julien Carreyn
