This book celebrates one of France’s most celebrated photographers through a selection of 41 conversations he conducted throughout his career, between 1951 and 2003. Cartier-Bresson was reluctant to give interviews that sought to unravel the mysteries of his talent, but in the end he gave many. This selection of texts, some of them little-known or previously unpublished, including several radio and video interviews, captures his fine, provocative spirit, more inclined to talk about painting or literature than photography pure and simple.

These interviews give an insight into his life and work, while offering keys to his aesthetic approach. They also show the evolution of his thinking on photography and his relationship with film, drawing and painting. This collection takes a fresh look at this exceptional artist and thinker. It is illustrated by a selection of some thirty photographs and drawings by Henri Cartier-Bresson, in collaboration with the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation.
